Brunch spots in Toronto

Overall experience:

✨2.5/5✨

💸$20-25/person💸

With friends over from out of town, what better than to start the day with brunch. Bar Reyna had been popping up all over our Instagram feed and we thought why not. That same voice has also been urging us to do a McDonald's breakfast 🍟 some day and we're not judging it - nor hushing it.

Bar Reyna drips with modern elegance. Shimmering gold chandeliers casting playful shadows in the restaurant, mirrors of every shape reflecting that light, and gold-speckled paint splattered upon cream walls. It was a sight to behold, and entranced, we did, trying to capture the very sight.

What started off as a very good sign continued ('cause who doesn't like well-executed opulence and gold really), and we sipped our coffee in the warm interiors. Strong and bold, just like we like our coffee (and most probably a Nespresso). Greek fries came around for the table, and famished, we dug in. The good signs continued. Tangy, crisp, and many. Good fries and good signs indeed.

When came time for our main dishes, that's when it stopped. Small portions (just barely enough for one - though now we don't know if we're just big eaters) and food that was okay. It's well presented and good, don't get us wrong, but a tad underwhelming. Pictured here is the avocado toast, salmon eggs Benedict, shakshuka (super yummy and the single thing we'd recommend), and the croque madame. Underwhelming but nothing against them. We'd have loved to try the Qatayef pancakes but the liqueur within the batter was a no go.

Overall, Bar Reyna gets a 2.5 ☆ out of 5. The stunning interiors and warming service though wonderful, are not enough to raise our score. Perhaps they do deserve a second visit like in Maha's case - however, 'til then, we might just follow the voice urging us into McDonald's (not to say that they are the status quo but who doesn't love a greasy hash brown and nostalgic memories).

Until next time, wonderful readers, stay warm and caffeinated!
